History

Lone Tree Ranch was originally founded in 1876 by Conrad Gerlach to pursue farming and ranching in San Joaquin County. The ranch began grazing sheep and farmed barley to sustain its future. Over the last 134 years the ranch has evolved into rangelands utilized for beef production and aggregate mining.

As a sixth generation descendant of the Conrad Gerlach, Rhona Cheatwood strives to preserve her family history and create a sustainable lifestyle for the ranch. Horses have always been an integral part of the family used for gathering cattle, recreational riding, and competitive sports.

Through hard work and determination Rhona has transformed the ranch headquarters into a haven for equestrian enthusiasts to board, train, and enjoy riding on the 310 acres of rolling foothills. Rhona resides at Lone Tree Ranch with her mother Suzanne, and grandmother Dorothy Gerlach Crites.

Rhona’s love for horses and the outdoors was inspired by her grandfather who laid the foundation for her life dream. With energy and inspiration to spare, she also works as wildlife biologist on projects throughout California.

Rhona also spends several months a year working for an Alaska Hunting outfitter as a guide assistant, cook, and horsepacker.
